Different Types of Breast Augmentation Incisions

Last updated 3 months ago

When performing a breast augmentation, there are four main types of incisions that surgeons use as an entry point for the implant.  Incision patterns and lengths depend on a patient’s anatomy, lifestyle, desired implant size, implant type, and other specific needs, as well as the surgeon’s preferences.  Read on to learn more about the four different types of incision patterns:

  • Periareolar incision:  This type of incision is also known as the nipple incision.  It is one of the most commonly used patterns and is placed around the edge of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple).  The placement of this incision helps it to blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin once it heals.
  • Inframammary incision:  The inframammary incision, or crease incision, is located within the crease underneath the breast.  This type of incision allows the surgeon to work more closely with the breast and provides better control and visualization during the placement of the breast implant.  Upon healing, the scar is hidden underneath the breast.
  • Transumbilical (TUBA) incision:  This incision is one of the newest available for breast augmentation surgery and is located at the navel, rather than the chest.  While this incision placement eliminates scarring in the breast area, the location of the incision can limit the surgeon’s access to the breast tissue, making implant placement more difficult.
  • Transaxillary incision:  The transaxillary incision is placed underneath the armpit.  This type of incision can limit the surgeon’s precision, as its location is further from the breast tissue.

Each of the above incisions has its own benefits and risks.  Deciding to augment your breasts is a very personal choice and requires much thought and input from a specialist.  If you are looking to learn more about breast augmentation and what type of incision may be right for you, contact the professionals at the Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Center at (925) 297-4614 and schedule your private consultation today.
